I received an unsolicited advertisement email from FarmFoods for a grass-fed beef sampler pack promotion. The promotion was for 7-10 pounds of selected cuts of beef for $99. I was not able to select the cuts of beef: they were to be selected by FarmFoods, and were described by FarmFoods as: “In this sampler pack you will find less common beef cuts that you may not have experienced before. The total pack is 7-10 pounds and contains at least 6 different cuts from the ones listed below: Top Sirloin Steak, Sirloin Bavette Steak/Roast, Sirloin Tip Steak/Roast, Sirloin Tri Tip Steak/Roast, Brisket, Chuck Eye Steak/Roast, Cross Rib Steak/Roast, Flank Steak, Flat Iron Steak, Coulotte steak, Lifter meat, London Broil, Skirt Steak, Eye of Round, Short Ribs, Osso Bucco, New York Steak, Rib Eye Steak, Shoulder Clod, Teres Major, Underblade Steak/Roast, or Wagyu Ground” I thought, “Great, lots of steak options, including lesser-known, expensive cuts, such as bavette, coulotte, and flat iron; maybe I’ll get lucky and one or two of those will be selected.” Instead, I received a 6+ oz. piece of skirt steak, a 10+ oz. piece of chuck roll, a 7+ oz. piece of top sirloin, a 1-pound cube of wagyu ground, a 10+ oz. piece of eye of round, and a 3.5-pound piece of shoulder clod. All told, this amounted to 6 pounds, 14 ounces of meat, and that is including the six separate pieces of vacuum packaging. None of these pieces are particularly expensive cuts of meat (except the wagyu, if that is what it truly is), and the shoulder clod (over half of the total weight) is one of the cheaper cuts on the animal. Plus, the vacuum packaging for the wagyu ground was open, resulting in the meat to be freezer-burned from the dry ice used during shipping. I did utilize a 10% coupon for first time orders, so I received 6.875 pounds of rather ordinary cuts of beef for $89, or $12.95 per pound. I have purchased grass fed/grass finished beef online, as well as heritage pork online, so I am at least somewhat familiar with what to expect for cost and quality when ordering from higher end meat sources. Based on what I paid for the items that I received, I don’t feel that I received value for my money. I do not recommend buying from FarmFoods. The day after I received my order, I received a new email from FarmFoods advertising another sale. I instantly unsubscribed from their mailing list.
