Recently, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job of 16 years. I am beyond retirement age. At the urging of a friend, I began to think about Medicare. After a bit of googling, my eyes glazed over and brain fog rolled in. Where to start? What to do? Who to talk to? My friend, a bit younger than me, has been thinking about his retirement healthcare path. He shared a lot of information, advice, and conclusions from his own online research. One of the resources he shared was askchapter.org. The Chapter site is brilliant in its simplicity of purpose, layout, and interaction. In tandem with pointing me to Chapter, and with my permission, my friend shared the broad strokes of my situation in an email with Chapter Medicare Advisor, Caroline Jetter. Over the course of two or three days, she and I talked on the phone. During our conversations, she very patiently explained--often, multiple times--what I needed to do to complete my enrollment in Medicare Part B, as well as explaining the benefits of an optional supplemental Plan G to cover potential gaps in my Part A (Hospital) or Part B (Medical) Medicare coverage. And, she guided me through a Medicare Part D prescription-drug plan selection. Not once did Caroline express impatience, exasperation, or a reluctance to explain something a second or third time. I learned a lot and now feel secure in the decisions I made and required steps I completed with Caroline's help. My thanks to Caroline and to Chapter.
