Halfords have refused to post my review on their site so I'm putting it here.
I booked online for my car's annual service & MOT at the Southend on Sea centre. I've used them for a couple of years & been both amused & annoyed by the attempts to sell extras & the lengthy 'advisory' list of work they claim needs doing that is invariably given.
This year was different. Maybe they use profiling & had identified me as an ageing bloke who would accept whatever they said!
The handover of the car was easy, the sales pitch for extra items avoided & I waited for the call that it was completed. I got the call – it had failed on the rear brakes with 'Brake discs significantly & obviously worn / corroded'. Interesting – there had been a verbal advisory that the discs were worn but within the limits the previous year (with a jaw dropping price quote for replacement) and I had the discs & pads replaced 7 or 8 months ago at another garage for about half Halford's quote.
Halfords seemed quite surprised that I didn't agree to the work and I took the car back to the other garage. They checked the discs, nothing wrong, little wear, no corrosion & only 3 – 4000 miles done since fitting. So I put it in for an MOT at the centre they use – the brakes were fine but Halfords had missed a potentially dangerous fault in the steering (but fairly cheap to repair) that needed fixing before it passed its MOT.
I contacted the DVSA who re-mot'd my car - nothing wrong with the brakes. They are visiting Halfords to investigate the unjustified failure.
I will never use Halfords again. In common with the other national chains they are far more interested in meeting sales targets, pushing unnecessary and expensive repairs & selling extras rather than identifying actual faults.
I'm certain they try it on with many customers who they think will accept whatever they say & pay their inflated prices. They're a bunch of cowboys - Avoid!
