One of the interesting things about adapting comics into film and television is that we can transform the naïve childishness that most of grow out of, into a fantasy world that sustains us an escape day-to-day. One of the less than meritorious is when those adapted comics, adopt fantasy worlds that the most reputable sci-fi and sci-fantasy authors would reject. The Umbrella Academy is such an example. The “intelligent chimp” trope was rejected and parodied by the creators of The Simpsons two decades ago. Never mind. Resurrect it as if it can be adopted seriously. Big buddy brother hero number one, is not only sexist, super-masculinist, super-white bread racist but can be counted off on so many lists that is almost challenges every reactionary politically correct movement to challenge it. Its saddest aspect is that it seems to take itself seriously. This is television at its trashiest, from the male kid back from the future genius and his obsession with a female mannequin (how did that pass censors), to it drug glorification in one of his brothers (how did that pass censors); this is garbage and “filler” in every way. I left this pathetic excuse for entertainment feeling that, if this was an umbrella, I would wish for more rain.
