I purchased these without pads--a set of 4 in black and also 4 in white. Very easy to assemble, surprisingly comfortable on the lower back--the curved portion is somehow just right. I am considering toppers but we really are impressed how comfy they are as is without and everyone loves the seat design. It would be a shame to hide that design element. So far, so good! We shall see how they hold up over time
