My attempts to get a therapist or psychiatrist to help me with my PPD were many. And nobody would look at the problem as if it were special (I was diagnosed and treated very generally… as if I didn’t understand what I was actually needing.) Through that effort I learned that the entire experience of having a baby is so unbelievably special and wildly unique from person to person. And not treating your patients with the kind of care that they are asking for is giving the whole practice of “caring for your mental health” a bad name. You wouldn’t treat a ruptured appendix the same way you’d treat a broken femur right? Prospera helped me find Tracey and I finally felt LISTENED TO. Nobody was eager to jump up and give me antidepressants. Nobody wanted to just lazily talk about my week and if work was hard. We immediately started off with a plan, and so far I’m just very appreciative we are working through this with intention and a goal.
