Seeking a new set of headphones. I had two models in my sights as 'recommended best buys.' The Philips Fidelio M1were on the Richer Sounds website but with the caveat that the last few pairs had been reduced in store, subject to availability. I tried to phone the Croydon store, which I have used before, but the lines were busy. As I had to go to Croydon anyway for some other more mundane shopping, I decided to take the hike down to South Croydon on the off chance. When I got there, the staff were indeed busy with other customers. I couldn't see the Philips or the other model of interest (Sennheiser Momentum) on display, but as the guy behind the counter was explaining the difference between different sets of headphones to another customer, I decided to wait my turn and ask. After about a minute of being in the shop (and while the other customer was busy listening to something) he asked if I was OK to wait while he finished with the lady in front of him. Answering, "Yes of course," but pleased to be asked. I took my turn. When it came, he informed me that both models were in stock and he went to fetch the last set of the Philips and both variants of the Sennheisers. He also quickly told me that although the Philips came up at £119.99 there was an offer on the website and they would be available at £99.99. He then unboxed those and the first and cheaper 'on ear' Sennheisers, suggesting I have a good listen and take my time, adding no opinion on the two models other than, "Let the headphones do the talking." . Asking if it was OK first, he then went to serve someone else, but checked back with me as soon as he could. With the benefit of a bit of time to play through several tracks, I ultimately picked the Philips, being pleasantly surprised at how close they ran the more expensive model. There was a difference, but not all of it positive with the Sennheisers adding a sibilance to a couple of the tracks I played. Whilst it was suggested that this might well settle down once they were properly burnt in, a useful comment and something that I was both aware of and agreed with, there was no pressure to go for the more expensive product. We even chatted about a customer coming in with exactly the same request the day before, but as he had ultimately been undecided that last set of Philips were still available. I came away with the feeling that for once all of the ducks had lined up, I'd got what I wanted, but more than I'd expected and also a bit of a bargain. Looking at the receipt it was Richard who served me, so thanks are due for polite, informed, friendly and patient service and giving me the time to make my own mind up without pressure. A very satisfied customer.
