I’ve had the unfortunate experience of flying with Ryanair multiple times over the past few months. If you’re traveling with just a backpack, you’ll probably be fine. The base ticket prices are usually lower than other budget airlines. However, the moment you need anything more especially a carry-on you should prepare to be nickel and dimed, even after paying extra in advance for the same bag.
I prepaid for carry-on luggage multiple times, only to be stopped at the gate or counter and told my bag was too big even though it clearly met their size and weight requirements. The same bag was accepted on some flights, but rejected on others. This seems intentional. I was charged €90 once at the gate, despite having prepaid for overhead space. On two other occasions, I was hit with €40 and €70 fees. Meanwhile, I saw other passengers bringing larger bags on board without issue.
I have photos and documentation to prove the inconsistencies, but Ryanair's customer service is nonexistent. I reported this to them and they just close the case. Which I should include in the review for reference. Their website is nearly impossible to navigate, and support is either automated or completely unhelpful.
To be fair, the flight crew on board and the flights themselves were satisfactory. But the frustration and lack of transparency with baggage far outweigh any savings.
Bottom line: Backpack only? You’ll likely be fine. Need a carry-on or small suitcase? Prepare to be scammed. Alternative? Fly Vueling or another airline. I’ve had great experiences with them friendly staff, no surprise fees, and they actually honor their own baggage policy. Avoid Ryanair at all costs unless you’re willing to gamble with your money at the gate.
