This company is pure sleaze. We rented a unit as one of their first ever customers in the brand new facility with a rate of $289 a month with 50% off for the first two months. After comparing prices, we made the decision to rent a unit here based on the new appearance (new building), location, and rates. The company insisted we put the account on autopay as they threatened to slap a lock on our unit if we were even a day late on rent, so we obliged. That's where the problems began. A few months after we moved in, we opened the door to our unit on a hot summer day and found tons of jackets, clothes, suitcases, etc. covered in mold. We investigated the hallways and found water dripping from the a/c ducts and pooling up on the floor. We then went to the office to complain about the issue and were told that it was not the company's problem because we had not taken their in-house insurance. Fine. So, we went to our own insurance company and made the claim and they covered everything, but no attempt was made by SecureSpace to remedy the problem or offer us some sort of discounted rent for the massive inconvenience caused. This was particularly shocking given that it was directly caused by their faulty HVAC system regardless of who paid the claim. You see, rather than try to remedy the problem, SecureSpace decided to "fix" my concerns by raising our rent 20.7% without any notice. Thanks to their convenient pressuring for us to join autopay, they were able to just start charging our account more money without us noticing. Now the rent being charged was $349/month and we had yet to physically be in the unit for even 6 months! This is basically entrapment, as they watch you hire a moving truck to move literally thousands of pounds of stuff into the unit and know it is not easy for you to move out or do anything about it. The audacity of the greed is beyond words. Only when reviewing bank records for taxes do we notice a few months later that this has been happening. So we called corporate customer service to address this and were connected to a foreign call center where no one could understand what we were saying, no supervisor was available, and were told to contact the local store. When contacting the store, we were told we had to put our concerns in writing, so we did. In our letter, we specifically addressed how we felt cheated, lied to, and that the company was acting solely in the interest of profits with no concern for it's customers' budgets or the advertising/promises made. We were told the company does not increase rent often, but that was a lie. They seem to do it every couple of months and by enormous amounts. We specifically addressed how this felt like we were being needlessly squeezed so some district manager could high five his VP on a corporate earnings report and nothing more. In fact, I can confirm throughout these ordeals that the local staff are kind, friendly people who genuinely want to help as best they can but their hands are tied by the greed of their corporate backers, who are really nothing more than a California-based tech company with a small number of employees who are focused entirely on profits with little concern to the real people they rent to. We even went to them before writing this review to plead a final time for a reality check on their sleazy behavior but were told quite literally, "no, we don't care." It seems we were not alone here either. After our ordeals and deciding that something was truly morally bankrupt with SecureSpace as a company, we began researching alternative storage facilities in the area and quickly discovered more than one other company who recalled tales from other former SecureSpace renters who had experienced the same sort of predatory rent increases that we had, as well as folks who had experienced rodents coming in to their external units. Clearly, a pattern began to emerge. SecureSpace seems to be a tech company that operates like a rob-o-landlord. They neither properly design nor build their facilities correctly. They do not care when you have problems when renting from them. They do not care when they raise your rent by 20.7% in less than 6 months without notice AND when you call them out on it, they say because you didn't notice fast enough it's justified and fair. Simply put, they don't care about you. They care about profits. Let that sink in before you make the mistake of renting from them. I know I never will ever again and I hope to warn others of the same. With all of our efforts, this company can go out of business and the world will be a better place for it. Behind the shiny new building is a world of problems and a corporate-level management team that views customers like numbers to be exploited. Don't say I didn't warn you- THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THE PLACE FOR LONG-TERM RENTING!
