I've previously taken 32 independent, self-arranged, unguided trips to Europe, so the
Waterways of the Czars trip was a wholly new experience. It turned out much better than
I anticipated. The one real disappointment (missing the wooden churches of Kizhi Island)
was caused by dense fog on the waterways, which was obviously beyond the tour operator's control. The group leader came up with a good "Plan B" (visiting a decommissioned sub and the war memorials at Vytegra), so that saved the day.
