To have \u201cno condemnation\u201d declared means to be found innocent of the accusation, to have no sentence inflicted and no guilty verdict found. By the grace of God, believers in Jesus Christ will not face the condemnation of God. \u201cWe have passed from death to life\u201d (1 John 3:14).\n\n\nThe Bible teaches that every human being will be brought before the judgment throne of God for an ultimate and decisive judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10), and Christ Himself will be the judge (John 5:27). We are all naturally under the condemnation of God: \u201cWhoever does not believe stands condemned already\u201d (John 3:18b). But Christians will not be found guilty on Judgment Day (John 3:18a; Matthew 25:33\u201334).\n\nHowever, the \u201cno condemnation\u201d involves more than acquittal on Judgment Day. In Romans 8:1 the apostle Paul speaks in the present tense, as evidenced by the word now. Also, notice the word therefore, which points the reader to the previous passage of Romans 7:21-25. In Romans 7 Paul describes his struggle against the sinful nature\u2014a struggle that every believer experiences. Paul writes, \u201cAlthough I want to do good, evil is right there with me\u201d (Romans 7:21) and, \u201cWhat a wretched man I am!\u201d (Romans 7:24). Paul is expressing his hatred for the sinful nature which continues to war against his new nature in Christ\u2014Paul hates the sin he commits, but he is also thankful because he has been set free from slavery to sin. He now has the ability to do what is good because Christ has delivered him (Romans 7:25).\n\nPaul takes this a step further in Romans 8 when he teaches believers are not only free from bondage to sin, they are free from the inner emotions and thoughts that tend to bring feelings of condemnation to the Christian when he does commit sin (Romans 8:2). Christians are free from the \u201claw of sin and death,\u201d which means, although they will commit sin, the Law no longer has the power to condemn them. We are not under the Law\u2019s condemnation because Jesus fulfilled (\u201cfilled-up, completed\u201d) the expectations of the Law perfectly, and believers are \u201cin Christ\u201d (Romans 8:3). Because believers are in Christ, they have the joy of being counted as righteous, simply because Christ is righteous (Philippians 3:9). Paul also points out that genuine Christians, although they struggle, will not live \u201caccording to the flesh\u201d; that is, they will not persist in a constant state of sinful living (Romans 8:5).\n\nPaul encourages us that we need not fear condemnation because we can come to God as our loving, forgiving Father (Romans 8:15\u201316). Christians who live in shame and guilt over past failures are needlessly condemning themselves when they ought to be \u201cforgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead\u201d (Philippians 3:13). Fear can be paralyzing, \u201cbut perfect love drives out fear\u201d (1 John 4:18). As Christians, we must understand that our justification is found in Christ alone\u2014in His finished work on the cross\u2014not in what we do or don\u2019t do (Romans 3:28). Believers can find solace in the assurance that we have been adopted into God\u2019s own family and have been made heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.\n\n16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.\n\n17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. \u2013 Colossians 3:2\n\nIn Colossians 3:2, the words \u201cset your affection on things above\u201d means to place your mind and thoughts on them, to show favor towards them, and to be affectionately desirous of them.\n\nFor example, because I have affection toward my family, my thoughts are occupied with them as well.\n\nWhat kind of things consume your thoughts? If you deeply ponder the answer, you\u2019ll know where your real affections lie. Your affections as a wife will probably be towards your husband. Your affections as a mother will probably be towards your children. Your affections as a daughter will probably be towards your parents and grandparents.\n\nIt\u2019s a good thing to love our family and friends, but beyond our loved ones, what consumes our minds most of the time?\n\nToday, the world has many things that consume their minds\u2026MoneyElectronicsFoodEntertainmentTV ProgramsTravelClothingShoesPursesHair, Makeup, BeautySports\n\nand more..\n\nNone of these earthly things will we get to take with us to Heaven. We are certainly to enjoy the life that God\u2019s granted us here on earth, but without setting our affections on things above, our mind, thoughts and actions will only be on the temporary things. Setting our affections on the \u201chere and now\u201d of what we can get out of life will profit us NOTHING in our future in Heaven.\n\nWhat are the things above?\n\nOur Heavenly Father; our Savior, Jesus Christ\n\nOur eternal home\n\nOur Christian loved ones, who have passed on before us.\n\nA place of no pain, suffering, sorrow, nor tears\n\nA place of rest and peace\n\nA place without sin and evil\n\nAre you beginning to see my point? \n\nWhen we start to set our affections on things above, the \u201chere and now\u201d hardships aren\u2019t so dreadful\u2026 the \u201chere and now\u201d becomes more \u201ctemporary\u201d in our minds.\n\nThe suffering, the sorrow, the pain, the tears\u2026 they\u2019re temporary.\n\nOur goals are no longer to work more for here on earth, but to please our Heavenly Father above.\n\nYour affection as a child of God should be on things above\u2026 things eternal. This is called \u201cdying to self.\u201d It\u2019s a call to absolute surrender. After each time Jesus commanded cross bearing, He said, \u201cFor whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?\u201d (Luke 9:24-25). Although the call is tough, the reward is matchless.\n\nWherever Jesus went, He drew crowds. Although these multitudes often followed Him as Messiah, their view of who the Messiah really was\u2014and what He would do\u2014was distorted. They thought the Christ would usher in the restored kingdom. They believed He would free them from the oppressive rule of their Roman occupiers. Even Christ\u2019s own inner circle of disciples thought the kingdom was coming soon (Luke 19:11). When Jesus began teaching that He was going to die at the hands of the Jewish leaders and their Gentile overlords (Luke 9:22), His popularity sank. Many of the shocked followers rejected Him. Truly, they were not able to put to death their own ideas, plans, and desires, and exchange them for His.\n\nFollowing Jesus is easy when life runs smoothly; our true commitment to Him is revealed during trials. Jesus assured us that trials will come to His followers (John 16:33). Discipleship demands sacrifice, and Jesus never hid that cost.\n\nIn Luke 9:57-62, three people seemed willing to follow Jesus. When Jesus questioned them further, their commitment was half-hearted at best. They failed to count the cost of following Him. None was willing to take up his cross and crucify upon it his own interests.\n\nTherefore, Jesus appeared to dissuade them. How different from the typical Gospel presentation!
