When trading equities, the market can open the next day with a gap down. You won't be able to do anything if a politician tweets something that could cause the market to fall, and your investment could be wiped out. Because the gap can skip your stop loss (thus the name "market gap"), a stop loss will not protect you from market gaps. Such a thing cannot happen in bitcoin because there are no market gaps when it is traded 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
