They allow anyone to put a mark against companies without any verification of having done business with that company whatsoever.
Google reviews work similarly, but they don't carry the same weight as those from Trustpilot, who claim to be all about authenticity.
A genuine request to remove two completely fraudulent reviews was met with total indifference - in fact, I was encouraged to complete the bogus profile page that was set up for the review!
