When Turo works, it's great. Unfortunately, in my recent experience, it only works about half the time. I'm 45 and have a perfect review history on Turo, mostly with higher end cars. No accidents or tickets on my driving record. My most common issue has been "ghosting" by owners immediately before a trip. I'll have a reservation set up a month or more in advance, prepaid. Then, as I get closer, I'll notice that the car has been delisted from Turo (I only know this because I now know to check this out as the trip is approaching). I reach out to the owner, and get some version of, "Oh something happened and the car is no longer available." No heads up from the owner or Turo, and it's only because I reached out that I learned there was any issue. In all cases, Turo cancels the reservation and gives me a refund (eventually... they push hard to do an account credit instead) but I'm left scrambling to make alternate arrangements. It also smells strongly of a scam. The "owner" never intended to rent the car - they just wanted to hold my money for a month or more (and who knows if Turo ever got it back from them). If you are doing an airport drop off with Turo (extra fee) and don't mind using one of the big agencies as a backup should things with Turo go south at the last minute, it's not a bad option. But if it's a special rental and actually getting the car you reserved is critical, I would avoid Turo and go with a well-reviewed specialty local car rental place. One positive thing I can say - when you chat with customer support, it's relatively straightforward to get transferred to a manager. In my experience, they take the time to actually understand happened. They haven't really done anything about it, but I at least felt heard, which was better than getting stonewalled.
