We recently attended a Gin Lounge experience in Chester, of which I had been looking forward to for a year. There was a bit of hassle when trying to book the event with the event holders and I was struggling to get a response/answer from them for quite some time. Once they did get back to me, they explained that they were ceasing holding this event and therefore dates/venues were limited prior to expiration of my voucher, with most of the remaining events being in Leeds or London (none in the North West). The event holders agreed to extend my voucher to enable us to attend their last event held in Chester of which I was very grateful. On the night of the event, we attended the venue with the aim of grabbing a bite to eat prior to the event starting. The email received from the Gin Lounge prior to the evening, stated "We are very lucky to be working with venues that, as well as providing a beautiful room, offer a great selection of food and drinks for your enjoyment. You're more than welcome to purchase a drink or some food at the bar before or after the event to build up a good base/soak up the gin!". However, on our arrival, we were informed by the bar staff that they didn't serve food as such and could only offer one of two pies to patrons. As I have a dietary requirement, this offering was unsuitable and therefore I then had to wait until after the Gin Lounge event had finished to go and get some food elsewhere at 9.15 pm. At just before 7pm, we were instructed to head upstairs by the bar staff and and we were greeted by the host who was friendly. The room was laid out with small sample plastic glasses (x 6 per person) on shared tables, which was great as it allowed people to mix with other attendees. There seemed to be a lot of confusion to begin with, as around 10+ additional people, who were not on the host's list, began arriving after the 7pm start time. Although not the hosts personal responsibility, this did disrupt the start of the event, as stragglers were turning up even 20 minutes late. This meant that the host restarted his introduction a couple of times, eating into the 2 hour slot. The host was very knowledgeable about the history of gin and was very relaxed/approachable. In total, we all had a small sample of 6 gins, however the vast majority of people seemed to be quite disappointed in the gin. I am a gin lover, but I can honestly say that I didn't enjoy any of the offerings. The same can be said for others seated at my table; one of whom left 4 out of 6 of the samples. I learnt a lot about the history of the gin, however myself and my guest were pretty disappointed overall with the experience and would be hesitant to book a similar event in the future. I have friends who have been to gin events locally and in other cities, who have enjoyed the event as there were nicer gins on offer. I would not recommend to others unfortunately.
