I followed a link to the VouchedFor site from the Money Advice Service website. The VouchedFor site enabled me to find a choice of financial advisors who were in my area and who were able to offer the services I needed. The advisor I chose had a lot of good reviews, and also he and the firm he worked with were on the FCA register. As a beginner investor with no previous knowledge this was helpful and made taking the plunge a little less daunting.
