I love historical fiction in general but coupled with dark themes such as abuse; it makes the book darker and deeper. I love the motherly sentiment found by Cathy and also understand her desire to not get divorced since I grew up in a culture where divorce was taboo. As someone who's witnessed women in domestic abuse situations, I can imagine her relief when the telegram arrived. It must have felt like a burden off her shoulders. However, I personally am not a big fan of Sergeant Archie McIntosh of the Royal Engineers' Bomb Disposal Squad. I've always loved a bit more of a spark between my characters. The gears should grind together before being able to move in harmony. I personally don't believe that Sergeant Archie McIntosh of the Royal Engineers' Bomb Disposal Squad will get much character development in the story and that is disappointing. However, the author may surprise me.
