I ordered a Hermes belt, the classic H buckle, from Vestaire for $629.50 and was sent a fake. I wasn't certain if it was fake, but to it to the Hermes store in Chicago where they pointed out to me that it did not have the same style of hook and did not fit the interchangeable belt straps that go with this belt. The belt strap also did not have the same loop hole. I reported this to Vestaire and they said to send it to them for re-authentication. They then said they had their "expert team" evaluate it and that they determined it to not be a fake. I asked if I could see a certificate of authentication or any indication on how they reached this conclusion. They then kept sending the same automated responses about how they are a dependable luxury goods seller. They said they had put the belt back up for sale on their website and that if it sold, I could receive proceeds from that sale. I let them know that this would force me to participate in the fraud of selling counterfeit goods and that the original seller of the belt needed to take it back and reimburse me. When I looked at other items this person was selling they were clearly fakes and Vestaire is allowing them to use this platform. It cannot be legal to promote that you are selling authentic luxury goods and buyer protection when you are not monitoring what is being sold on your website and then saying items are authenticated by an expert team, but provide no information about what this process is (markings, inscriptions, size, materials). I have a strong feeling they make money on each returned fake item when they sell it again with their $78.00 buyer service fee they add to every order.
