We have used Pinwheel for 2 1/2 years and it's been a great first phone. I recommend it to anyone I talk to who is considering a phone for their kids. I appreciate that I can see and control everything from my phone or laptop, although I've given my daughter more freedom recently to be able to add her own contacts without needing my permission. Their app library has really expanded over tha last couple of years. Customer service is top notch, and I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for help - and they make it easy to reach a real human! I can't recommend this phone highly enough.
