I feel it is important to write about my experience with Rest Your Paws Brisbane so that others can make an informed decision. My staffy was admitted to animal emergency on 31/12 and I was given some terrible news. I made a booking with RYP for home euthanasia on New Year’s Day but later decided not to go ahead & contacted RYP to reschedule at another time. I cared for my dog at home until 7/01 when it became obvious that he was in extreme pain.  I arranged for RYP to perform home euthanasia that same afternoon.  Customer service and the vet assigned – Dr Tracey displayed compassion, empathy & kindness. However, things did not go smoothly as my staffy – Buddy had to be sedated 3 times in order to relax him & I can’t be sure that it did as his eyes were opened throughout the entire process. At the initial booking my staffy weighed 20kg but on 07/01 Buddy weighed only 18kg.  Assuming that the amount of sedation  required is measured by weight than the correct amount of sedation should have been administered once only and not 3 times. When it came to locating a vein to administer the anaesthetic, Dr Tracey was unable to locate a vein on both of Buddy’s forearms & a leg although it was clearly apparent that a cannula was injected into Buddys’ arms both at his Vet & at Animal Emergency.  Dr Tracey was able to administer the anaesthetic through a vein in Buddy’s abdomen?? Altogether Buddy was poked with a needle about 7 times (3 for sedation, 4 to locate a vein) when it should have been only 2 times if a more experience or competent person was performing this task.  Dr Tracey did advised that the difficulty in locating a vein was due to Buddy’s low blood pressure as a result of the tumour in him.  I am not convinced as both Buddy’s Vet & Animal Emergency were able to locate a vein on his forearms which I witnessed. My neighbour who was present during the procedure also expressed her unhappiness at the way it was conducted. To have to euthanise a pet in itself is traumatic.  To have the procedure NOT go smoothly is truly upsetting and no amount of explanation can justify the trauma felt and I can’t even imagine how uncomfortable my poor boy must have been. Buddy did not look relaxed during the process, on the contrary he looked scared with eyes opened even in death. Also, concerning is the fact that the RYP team is listed only by their first names on their webpage which can be perceived as unprofessional & lacking transparency as their qualifications & experience cannot be verified. I hope the above information will be of some use to anyone who is unfortunate enough to have to consider home euthanisation for their pet.
