This is a total rip-off. I’m a tutor and I was contacted by Tutoroo and asked if I was interested in providing English language tuition to a student in Brisbane. I agreed and was put in contact with my prospective student. That’s fine. What is not fine in anyway is the fact that my first two sessions require me to work for free. The student was asked to pay for a number of lessons up-front. They paid that money directly to Tutoroo. I completed a 1.5 hour initial lesson with my student two weeks ago. When I inquired about the fact that I have not received any payment for this lesson, I was informed by Tutoroo that this money goes to the company. Likewise, the money which I should receive for my second lesson also goes to the company. So, the student has paid upfront for provision of a service. The tutor receives nothing for the first two lessons. The language used by the company about payment is very vague (probably deliberately) and they state that the payment for the first two lessons goes to Tutoroo, with a reasonable inference being that it is then forwarded on to the tutor. However, this is not the case. So I’m expected to work for free for two lessons. Needless to say, I won’t be continuing my work with this company.
