In Feb 2020 I went on a tour from Tauranga to Rotorua to see the geysers and mudpots, Maori show and Art School. On the way we stopped at waterfalls and then a kiwi farm. There was time at Rotorua to look around independently, in addition to the group tour. Met lovely people from Europe on our small minibus. The only negative side was the driver said nothing- no commentary, but he got us back to our ship on time.
I would highly recommend taking this tour instead of a massive ship tour.
