The birds will sit on the edge of the feeder, next to the cup to eat the grape jelly. When eating the oranges, they typically sit on the edge of the orange.

“Only one half of the roof is liftable for filling. It's screwed tightly in place with hex head screws. The clear plastic can't be adjusted on that side to accommodate larger seeds. The cardinals would enjoy being able to get their black oilers. Disappointed in these basic design flaws.”

We're sorry you feel these are design flaws. Some of our feeders have a hinged roof like this and some of them have roofs that completely lift off. We like to give people multiple options.
