Got a Question?

Is there a curfew time on the box?
Asked by liam (2 months ago)
I’m a new driver and I brought my car about 7 months after passing my test, and I have not driven any car at all in that time. When I installed my black box my scores were great, all 100 but then after a few days my acceleration went down dramatically a week since I installed it and my acceleration score is now 14 out of 100, I seriously don’t understand because I’m not accelerating harshly or suddenly, and I’ll put my hands up I do sometimes rev my engine too much but that’s because it’s a new car for me and so I’m learning in it and will take me some time to adjust. Can someone please tell me why my score is going down so much? Thanks.

I have been searching for car insurance for me 19yr old and Hastings has come in the cheapest so far, however, after reading all the review I am hesitant at going ahead. Can you tell me if there is an error with these black boxes provided "smart miles" or has anyone had a response to say the issues with the “false” readings are being looked into ? there seems to be too many people with the same issue for this not to be investigated. I would like to take out the insurance I have been quoted for, however I am a little concerned and would like some more information

My son has currently got a policy with them and wished I had seen the reviews before we took the policy out. His braking score has been 0 since day one. This hasn't moved in the last three months. I would not recommend this company.

Hi, We fitted our smartmiles box on our car 24/8/18. I've downloaded the dashboard app, but it won't accept my login details. I've tried numerous times and I've also requested the details again (on a few occasions), but I haven't received anything via e-mail. I've also rang a couple of times to explain this, but I've still had no luck. All I've been sent through via e-mail are copies of my insurance documents...No log in details. Can you please help me obtain this information, as it's obviously important I keep track on my daughters driving.

Has anyone else had trouble with the driver rating score on the Hastings Direct Smart Miles app?? My score was at 43 on Saturday, going up to 54 on Monday after driving. I did not drive again after Monday afternoon, but my score went back down to 43 even though my car was parked. I am only young and cannot really afford to have to cancel my policy, pay the cancellation fees and to have to get another one :(.

I'm looking to buy an insurance policy with you, could you tell me how strict you are with acceleration, braking, and other things the black box records, please? And also do you offer a no claims discount/ no claims bonus? As I have seen a lot of reviews about those, so I just wanted to find out myself, as I have seen people get insurance canceled for going 3 miles per hour over the limit. Also after I purchase insurance, do I have to phone up, and arrange for an engineer to fit the black box? And how long do I have to phone up, before I incur charges or have my insurance canceled. Many thanks, Kind regards, Will.

Very strict...it’s a fix. My Daughter is the most careful new driver and I’m upset I’ve subjected her to this scam. I hope you didn’t go with Hastings :(

I'm driving very carefully but my score does not appear to improve, what am I supposed to do? I cannot drive any slower or any gently as I'm causing danger for other road users.

Just wondering if there are any tips on how to get my score up? I don’t speed and try not to break too harshly however my score is only on 48. Any tips would be appreciate. Thanks.

your smart miles policy is good in theory but is very lacking in real life scenarios and is very upsetting for our younger generation, it is not a good representation of how youngsters drive. The whole thing needs reviewing !!

My son drives carefully with your black box fitted and has had good scores but with one exception - braking. He brakes timely and without excessive pressure and we just cannot understand by his score for this should be zero. Can you help to explain the situation? Many thanks.

Same problem with my Daughter... even I’ve driven the car to try to improve the scores and nothing’s changed. It’s a fix. We’ve been scammed!

Why are the reviews so bad?

I completely agree with everyone who has posted about this company. The Telematics box is very erratic and sensitive to braking and acceleration. I was not made aware that if the score drops below 40 then they can cancel the policy and charge £240!! This was not made clear when I took out the policy. This is a significant feature of the policy and should be brought to the attention to customers at the outset. I have received an email stating that my score is below that if the score stays below 40 after another 200 miles then the policy will cancelled. I have raised a complaint and have every intention of taking my complaint to the Insurance Ombudsman. Some advice, yesterday I drove the car on a motorway for about 20 miles ,it's only a 1.0 Peugeot so not really a motorway car anyway the score went upto to 43 almost immediately afterwards. I am sure the score will drop once I start driving on normal roads where you have to accelerate and brake according to traffic situations. So I suppose motorway driving is the answer to keep your scores up. Certainly not ideal but seems a way to deal with this underhand insurer!

This is so sad, as infact I am only 18 years old, bought my first car, 2018 citroen c1 1.0 Feel. This is honestly the only insurance company that is so cheap, we only have 1 car at the moment, which is my parents, its a 1.6L. Which I cannot get insured on as Direct Line was a liar, when it came to renewal they said it would be cheaper to add me as named driver as it will cost £900 ! Phoned up and price increased to £2,900 !! What in the world! My mother is disabled, and I am her carer, my dad works a lot, and has even taken on 2 jobs. I cannot afford anything else, and I would need this car, to help take my mum around, as she had a car crash before and now she is disabled ! What am I going to do if someone pulls out in front of me, with Hastings Direct? If you brake hard you get a bad score ! Trying to work out if it's best to hit the person than brake and have your insurance canceled which would make no one want to insure you in the future!
