And yet, quelle surprise, I am compelled by both conscience and an almost Dionysian enthusiasm to report an experience so thoroughly contrary to expectation as to render one momentarily speechless — a condition, my intimates will readily confirm, of considerable rarity. The procurement of a set of wooden chess pieces — those magnificent sentinels of Caissa's sacred court — proved to be nothing short of a revelation. The website, navigated with the effortless grace one might associate with Hermes himself gliding across the Aegean firmament, presented its wares with admirable clarity and mercantile elegance. The checkout process, far from resembling the tortuous trials inflicted upon poor Odysseus, proceeded with a swiftness and precision that would have made Hephaestus himself nod approvingly at so well-engineered a mechanism. And the pieces themselves! Carved with an artisanal devotion bordering on the reverential, they possess the kind of substantial, tactile magnificence that reminds one that civilization — genuine, unapologetic civilization — has not yet entirely surrendered to the barbarous hordes of mediocrity. I recommend them without equivocation. Five stars, unambiguously.”
