“My partner and I (both "young" early-50s) I visited Opa for a birthday meal based on previous reviews. Overall, we were disappointed.
We went on a Saturday early evening. I agree with other comments about the entry feeling like a club but this was not a problem. Opa is cavernous inside. White painted walls with blue LED lighting which I found a little hard on the eyes. The interior seemed to present stylised "tourist" Greece, with white walls, statues, a large mural of greek rooftops and sea, and a huge screen showing slides of greek landscapes. Stylish, but not at all like the cosy greek tavernas we love and visit frequently. The first thing that struck me was the noise. The music was loud! The two of us had to shout to each other across a small table. We were initially concerned to be seated next to a large, party table but needn't have worried as the squealy girls were drowned out by the "ambient" music. At one point the music was suddenly raised for a couple of minutes to earsplitting pitch, with lively greek dance music. Loud enough to make me wince, and leave me with a throbbing ear on the speaker side. Maybe an accident but staff clapped along and smiled and the excruciatingly loud music clip was ended by "Opa!" so I'm unsure. The music then returned to "normal" loud but I spent the rest of our meal worried this would happen again. Service was very smiley and pleasant, and generally pretty prompt, though we had to wait a while and ask twice for the bill when we wanted to leave. The waiters were all equipped with headsets, so there was obviously some centralised control of service. The food... We started with mixed dips, which we shared as we are small eaters and usually can't manage a starter plus a main each. The chilli feta and tzaziki dips were nice but the third was tasteless. I don't know what it was and we couldn't hear the waitress's description for the loud music. The mains were tasty but meagre. My partner's sofrito was no more than a serving spoonful. Enough for an eight year old, but not an adult male. My lamb chops were tasty and tender but again, not much meat content. They came with a few vegetables which were served firm, and the carrot actually crunched when chewed, which to my mind is undercooked. The puddings were again tasty but tiny. The raisin and fig cake was more or less sticky toffee pudding. Came in a c.5cm cube. The baklava dessert was not what I'd called cheesecake, it was crumbled baklava pastry in the bottom of a tall dish with a swirl of creamy topping. No more than a couple of decent spoonfuls. By that time, (around 9pm) drinkers/clubbers were starting to arrive and I was ever more worried that the deafening music would resume, so we left. On arrival home, I realised that I was still slightly hungry and had something more to eat. In summary, we felt Opa was aimed towards "trendies", was too loud, and the food, though good, was overpriced and meagre. We were given a 25% off voucher, but I doubt we'll go back.”
