I found the counselling diploma content was comprehensive and gave me a good base of understanding and confidence that I have been able to apply in the workplace. I found all online staff were accessible, pleasant and easy to deal with. The platform occasionally had issues but nothing that wasn't sorted within a few days. Fellow students were incredibly supportive. Overall a very positive experience.”

“I originally left school in grade 10, to pursue a career as a travel consultant with no intentions of continuing my studies. Fast forward 5 years in the midst of an Australian drought in 2018, I returned to my family property to assist in these tough times, and through that experience, felt as though it was time to do something different with my life and be able to offer a different kind of support in future. I enrolled into the Diploma of Counselling at Open Colleges and I found the content and assignments incredibly helpoful and practical as a student and aspiring counsellor. I completed my Diploma in 18 months and then applied for university to study psychology, in which I gained some credits having completed my diploma. I now work as a rural and small business wellbeing counsellor, specialising in working with communities and families effected by natural disasters & completing my 4th year psychology studies to one day practice as a psychologist in this area. “The course was very repetitive, I had one assessor that knit picked everything I had done on the couple of modules she corrected this was extremely frustrating when your busy trying to move forward having to always go back for very minor mistakes her ego was at play here. “Cert II in Horticulture
I found it very difficult to progress through my course "at my own pace". Video assessment pieces were challenging, especially at first.
I was assured that I did not need a workplace placement to complete the course, but in fact, it would have made it so much more relevant and easier in the long run.
Modules were not unlocked at the start of the course and I was prevented from moving through while I waited on assessments to be completed (due to difficulties with videos), when I could have continued to progress.
Due to taking advantage of a discount I was talked into enrolling when I knew I would have no time to work on the materials, and in the end had to pay for extensions (partly because of the time wasted waiting for modules to be unlocked) and partly due to continued work and family commitments.
I also had some difficulty understanding one of the trainers when I reached out for clarification. It would have been easier to have one person to contact throughout the course, rather than have different people pick up questions on the discussion pages for each module's assessments.
Assessment items had limitations such as "one-page poster", "two-page leaflet", or "three minute video" when it was impossible to present all the information required within these restrictions. Almost every presentation assessment required explanation of WHS considerations, when we had previously completed a module about WHS, and this took up time when an understanding of new material could have been demonstrated.
I previously posted this review and was summarily condescended to in the response. As I was unable to respond I edited my review to add...
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my review, although it seems as though my opinions have been dismissed. I never expected not to work to gain my qualification, nor do I fail to understand assessment guidelines and why they are in place. My further study will not be completed through Open Colleges.
I have since completed two certificates (both Cert IV) with other RTOs and was much happier with them.”

“Was great at the start but towards the end a lot of miss communication. I thought I had 6 assessments left so I spent months doing them and paying extra money to only find out that I have two assignments left. After finishing them I told told that I didn’t finish and it was a whole process until they said I actually finished.”
