The pi Zero is a fine piece of equipment, has the processing power of the old Pi 2B, but no network or music output connectors. As an experiment I wanted to make a ultra low cost music/media player to use with RuneAudio, Volumio or KODI. On the other hand I wanted the best music quality possible. I integrated a PCM5102 based I2S DAC decoder, WiFi dongle and a Micro USB to Network LAN adapter/3 Port USB bought on-line in China, power supply for the second hand store and a locally purchased discounted micro SD card. Total cost, including postage, around Euro 30. The only problem is that the LAN connection automatically goes to sleep, this can be switched off when using a B model with on-board LAN. With WiFi everything works fine. The music quality is not as good as when using more expensive DAC’s, but is excellent for the price.
