We had a lovely week at Goldrill Cottage. The location is excellent within walking distance to Ullswater lake, and accessed through a gate and over a picturesque (but narrow) little bridge just off the main road. There’s a generous parking area with space for 2–3 cars (the owners do ask that you avoid parking on the grass). Once parked, you can’t immediately see the cottage as it sits behind a large double garage and some trees and shrubs, which adds privacy. The house has a good layout for larger families/groups with 2 bedrooms downstairs and 2 upstairs (one curious room upstairs locked though which we wondered about its views etc) and the living space is comfortable with beautiful views. A few things could be improved like the mattresses in the double rooms which were quite basic and not very supportive… A really important factor for us when staying in holiday homes for the comfort and rest, particularly after long days and getting up early! The downstairs bathroom was small and can also get damp as there’s no extractor fan. The lounge was good size albeit with somewhat eclectic seating options but comfortable. The TV is on the small side and positioned in a corner shelving area, which makes viewing a bit awkward from the main seating area when larger groups. Fireplace was a great option for when the evenings were wet and cooler and plenty of logs, kindling wood and firelighters but nothing in the property to light it with!! Out the back there was good size wooden bench to sit and enjoy the stunning views and wildlife on the river. There is as others mentioned a steep drop along a section of the patio edge. Just be aware at night and we had to keep an eye on our older dog with poor eyesight when letting him out! A nice touch was the bird feeder outside the patio doors where we saw a mix of birds from bluetits, woodpeckers and robins! The bird food lasted coupe of days so make the most of it early on! Good and well stocked kitchen with plenty of utensils, pots/pans, glasses and plates etc. Overall, we really enjoyed the setting and atmosphere. With a few updates, especially to the beds then this cottage could be exceptional.
