“You need to buy the wifi module (sold separately) in order to realize the wireless potential of the ESP-ME. Here is my story: The module is inserted into the designated slot on the Rainbird controller panel where it is supposed to work as a wireless gateway via a "Rainbird xxxx" network appearing on your smartphone. You also have the option via wi-fi to link to the Rainbird server for updates and control or modify operations/ programs when you are away from home. Problem one: The wi-fi Module sent a signal to my iPhone and then it disappeared at will despite being feet away from the module.
Problem two: Given the problem one, I could never get the entire setup to work with the internet eg. my router, despite having the correct gigahertz signal(s). Summarily, I opted out of the server feature which it allowed me to do, without the signal from the module to my smartphone, the Rain Bird - ESP-ME WIFI system was a failure. However, If you are looking to upgrade or replace an older control box for some reason, the panel will work without the wifi module. It was disappointing because the only reason for purchasing was to have the wifi and it didn't work. I had to return both items to Big Frog who wonderfully supportive. My internet research on this system revealed many users having the same problems with the ESP-ME, however, some users seem to have no issues.”
