“When we first purchased the house, my father-in-law didn't know the purpose of these little square inserts. So, they never made it into the birdhouse. When I adopted it, I found all four of them in one of the house sections. I use these and they keep the nesting area dry if you are in an area of heavy rain. Just be careful when you're putting your house up in the spring. If you don’t keep it level, the plates can tilt in the nesting area, sometime blocking the entrance. This only happened once to me, but I thought I should throw it out there.”
