it is the strapping that holds your feet to the thong
with rockos its a material that stretches if you have big feet and doesn't break when it gets wet or wears out early over time
I have had my rockos for over 2 years ..not a drama
the others like surfers joes the strapping has not enough space for big feet to fit in and breaks and wears out early
