“High quality wood and beautiful once put together. The customer service was really great and they are quick to return messages. I needed it delivered by a certain date as I was driving through and they were able to make that happen.”
“Shipping: the components were packed extremely well in foam sheet. One of the side rails did have a corner split about 2", possibly from impact. I did not contact the company, I injected wood glue and clamped it overnight and would consider it a total repair, the split was clean and not visible afterward.
Finish: I would suggest sanding these parts thoroughly. They were delivered with some surface roughness, and many small tear-out fuzzies on the complex routed features. Easy to remove while sanding.
Accuracy: The parts generally fit together perfectly, but the threaded inserts for the rails were not aligned well. Force had to be applied to get the all-thread components to slide into the holes and pockets, since the inserts were not installed in the posts at perfect 90 degrees to the face of the post.
Design: Looks good, simple and classic. I would like the headboard to extend down a bit more, even with a thick mattress there is a gap of a few inches that pillows can slowly get into. I did not stain the wood, but rubbed in a light treatment of Walrus Oil's Furniture Butter paste wax for preservation.
Performance: Most areas of the bed are strong and stable. The center beam is comparatively shallow and with only about 200 lbs, it was excessively bouncy and would flex an inch or more in the middle. I had to fabricate a middle support for the center of the bed. I understand that the California King is a newer addition to the lineup, and the extra length may have contributed to unexpected flexibility. However, beam deflection given the same moment of inertial is proportional to the cube of the length; I calculate that 84" versus 80" make the Cal King long beams about 15.7% more flexible than the King or Queen products. So in future designs I would probably want to see the center beam at least as wide as the side rails, below the slat notches. Or add a center support for these larger beds.
Overall, I am happy with the purchase and expect to use it for many years to come. This is high quality furniture with high quality wood, it just may need some design tweaks and buyers should see the opportunity for final surface treatment as a chance to make it their own.”
“Beautiful frame, excellent quality and customer service. Finished it with Rubio Monocoat. Very happy with this purchase.pillows cover most of the headboard but the wood grain is lovely.”
“It’s pretty and sturdy. It was hard to find a king platform bed that was 12” off the floor and had no middle leg, in order to fit a twin trundle underneath and still be pretty. The Upton accomplished it all. Communication was helpful.”
“This thing is beautiful, heavy, and rock solid. I got the California king and it’s great! I stained it with a medium brown walnut and then finished it with sutherland’s tung oil. It turned out great.”
