This is a fun activity in Forest Gate, London

Important venue update: All workshops will take place at our new studio at 377 Station Road, Forest Gate.

Looking to expand your hand-building knowledge? This workshop will take you through all the steps to create your own medieval-style inlay tiles.
You will be guided through:

- The traditional methods used, and the history of this technique which was lost for hundreds of years.
- The two styles of medieval tile, inlay and sgraffito
- The different states of clay needed to achieve your design
- Deciding the shape of your tiles
- Carving out your own design
- Filling in the design with slip clay and cleaning away the surface to reveal your tile!

The Workshop will last 2.5 hours, and you will be required to return to the studio 6 weeks later to collect your tiles once they've been fired in the kiln. Postage is available at extra cost.

Please note: We strive to help you create something amazing during your pottery class. Because each piece is handmade and involves many variables (such as clay handling, glaze, and firing conditions), we’re unable to offer refunds or replacements for defects or damages that occur in items you’ve made.

We had a private class of 5 people for the Medieval Tile Making workshop, and we had such a wonderful time! We were shown the techniques and then we got to create for ourselves with the support of Sorrel. She was very knowledgeable on the topic and gave us excellent inspiration from her books and history. We are all very excited to see our finished pieces once they come out of the kiln!

This class was extremely good. The teacher was knowledgable, approachable and really helpful. The mood in the class was relaxed and everyone seemed to enjoy chatting and helping each other. The teacher was always there to offer encouragement, advice and ideas for designs. She's clearly not only an expert in ceramics but also in teaching and medieval art and desin. By far, this has been the best such crafting class I have attended. I can't recommend it enough.
