This is a fun activity in Balham, London

Ikebana is a revered Japanese art form of floral design ~ Kado is the Way of Flowers, where nature, mindful intention and artistry come together in harmonious expression. This is a hands‑on workshop where you’ll be introduced to the core techniques and cultural principles that make Ikebana such a unique and meaningful art form.

Your experience begins as you step inside a beautiful home overlooking a lush garden filled with Japanese maples, ferns, and an abundance of plant life. The setting itself is a tranquil, plant-filled sanctuary designed to inspire and creates an immediate sense of peace and creative energy.

You’ll work with a premium selection of seasonal flowers, sculptural branches, and carefully chosen plant material, including unusual and expressive stems that elevate your arrangement. Each participant receives personal, step‑by‑step guidance from me, a certified Sogetsu Ikebana teacher, ensuring you feel supported, confident, and creatively free throughout the process. I share the techniques, principles, treasured insights and valuable practical tips through subtle observations that bring Ikebana to life, from the first cut to the final placement.

The sessions honour the meditative spirit of Ikebana, inviting you to slow down, notice the character of each stem, and express your own artistic voice through natural materials. It is a moment to reconnect with nature, refine your artistic perspective and experience the calm beauty of this timeless Japanese art.

I welcome participants of all skill levels, requiring no previous flower arranging experience. The Japanese approach to floral design focuses on form, space and balance. It is accessible for complete beginners yet fascinating for those with creative interests or experience.

I keep my classes small, limited to 8 participants, allowing me to offer attentive guidance and personal support in a setting surrounded by natural beauty.

At the end of the session you will have created your very own signature Ikebana arrangement, a gorgeous showcase of your new skills. You will have extra flowers and plant material to continue creating and exploring at home.

If you are GIFTING this experience, you can arrange to purchase the Kenzan (metal pin flower holder) and the Suiban ceramic container in advance. Just send me a message after booking and I can take of this so that your guest simply arrives and enjoys a special Ikebana experience.

My daughter bought this for my birthday and I have to say what an amazing time we had. Tara was a great teacher and we could be ourselves and ask questions whenever we needed. Tara is so knowledgeable and very welcoming. Will I come back for another class, you bet I will. Thank you so much! Amy and Julieanne

I really enjoyed the class which I attended this evening with my friend. Tania was a fantastic teacher, Ikebana is mindful and fascinating. It's something I will definitely do again. Beautiful flowers, each one stunning in their own right with no excess. A beautiful practice. Another mindfulness tool to add to the toolbox. Slow down and appreciate nature, form and beauty.

I had an amazing introduction class to Ikebana. Tara explained me some history behind the craft and all the basics I need to know in order to put my hands in creating my first composition. The time flew by and I left the class filled with joy and beautiful flowers in my hands. Thank you!!! Very recommend the class

Tara is a very helpful and knowledgeable teacher. She draws on her experience with ikebana to teach you the basics you might not have known before. She helps you build decorations, offering suggestions and encouragement, but always leaves room for the creator to express their vision. This lesson was very inspiring for me. I left the class with my own decorations and flowers, and now I can create new arrangements at home following the instructions.

Loved the class, and found the activity very soothing and creative. The venue/ teachers homes is also lovely. I do have to score it down because of the additional charges though- the price doesn’t include taking home your creation so there is an extra £15 for the base of the ikebana and £20 for the pot, which adds up to quite a bit on top of the price of the class. The teacher does send an email about it (though i didn’t receive it) I just think that should be explained in the advert and options given around prices of pots or bringing your own.

I would highly recommend this class, the class was taught at a very relaxed pace, with a delicate balance of assistance and allowing us to work things out for ourselves. The teacher is very knowledgeable and you can tell she lives by the philosophy she teaches.

Tara was the most lovely teacher! She was so knowledgeable and kind, with such great input in helping arrange our ikebanas. The atmosphere and setting were perfect and her energy was so calm! Lovely teacher in such a niche and demanding craft. I went to this class with my friend and we both had an amazing experience. It is not only a fun activity and something different to do in London, but it is mentally engaging and there are lessons to be learned beyond just flower arranging. If I lived in London I would love to go back to one of Tara’s classes, but for those who do live there - I highly encourage you to attend her ikebana class :) thank you Tara for such a lovely experience.
