The industry recognized Bear Awareness online course offers a comprehensive awareness education. Utilizing interactive audio, pictures, narrations, simulations, videos, quizzes and a final exam, the Bear Essentials will equip individuals with the knowledge of the types of bears in Alberta, their habits and habitat, and how you can keep safe when venturing into bear country for work or play.
The course features video, animations, learning games and skill-building exercises and takes anywhere from 2.5 – 3 hours to complete.

“Good general awareness of aggressive and defensive behavior. I did not know this and have spent a lifetime in the woods in SK. This session was required for work and even though I feel that I am bear aware, I still had something to learn. I should note that I recently came to BC and had no previous knowledge of grizzly bears. Subsequently, I did my own research and found that the majority of serious bear injuries and fatalities in North America were from a predatory male black bears. It seems I had as much to worry about black bears in SK versus both species in the BC woods. It is only since coming to BC that I purchased bear spray because of the big bad grizzly bear fear factor. I was just not ever worried about black bears if I took all the precautions. After this, I will buy bear bangers also and have these at the ready. Suggest including some information on bear injuries and fatalities in Canada. Good job!”

“Overall this was a good course. My issue lies with the last Bear Identification Knowledge Check question, where a certificate is withheld until the learner can guess the correct combination of answers with no help or guidance along the way. I do not believe that is the best way to help people learn or understand the material. If someone requires this course for a project (Like I did) it can really hold them up if they don't get the answer soon. I reached out to Danatec for help and no one got back to me, which added to my frustration.”
