“I intended to keep this tool in a saddle bag or ride wallet, but lately I've been using a car rack that requires me to remove my front wheel. I'm using the Carrier bottle cage mount to keep the Essential8 handy for removing my thru-axle. It's capable of taking the 12nm of force to remove the axle, and I don't have to worry about overtightening when I put the wheel back on. The Essential8 is so much easier to use than the folding multi-tools I was using. Having the long arm allows me to adjust my saddle or derailleur limit screws without having to reposition the tool every quarter turn.”
“The Essential8 is a perfect multitool for a bike with all hex/Allen key and T25 fasteners. It is super light at 36 grams with the silicone Hug sleeve. I've purchased 3 of these now--I currently have 6 bikes and keep one in each saddle bag for the 3 of them that I am at all concerned about their overall weight. I have used these tools in anger on several occasions and they work flawlessly. I pack a folded blue paper shop towel to spead out on the ground for swapping bits around so as not to drop any in the grass or worse, and I reccomend this doscipline when using these in the field--especially as you may be adjusting things that were moved about in a crash, while bleeding and seeing stars--it is easy to misplace a little bit under those circumstances (I go for alcohol pads and bandaids first, of course). The Essential8 is the best solution out there for multitools. It's not cheap in any sense of that word, but then good tools are not cheap; it is well worth its price however. I have been riding since the 1960's, and in that time I have carried pretty much every configuration of multitool imaginable. I whittled these down over time to just a handfull of short Allen keys and a T25 rubber banded together in a little packet at 53 grams--then I found the Essential8. It takes patience and a little care to use, but then patience and a little care is not a bad thing when performing roadside repairs. If you are on the fence about one of these, just buy it (and the Hug sleeve) and have done with it--you will not regret the purchase.”
