“These are great tests - no messing around trying to work out whether one line is darker than another. However, you do need to understand how they work and what they’re testing for if you want to get the most out of them. For example, once you get a ‘high’ (which is caused by a rise in oestrogen) reading, the test is looking for a surge of a different hormone (LH) to move to peak. Even if your oestrogen levels reduce, the test will not go back to low and so if you don’t actually get an LH surge, you could get many days of high. People think that the test is faulty, but it is not reflecting your daily levels of oestrogen, it just stays on high until it picks up an LH surge. If you don’t ovulate, have a low surge or miss your surge, you will see ‘high’ for the rest of the month.
These are expensive tests and so it’s important to understand what they’re meant to do so you don’t end up wasting loads, testing when you’re either passed ovulation or have had an anovulatory cycle. Both which I have done!!”
