A marvelous tour! The star of the tour had to be the four Jaguars that we saw on a boat ride in the Pantanal. On top of that were the very birdy Jardim de Amazonas and Chapada dos Guimaraes as well as the Pantanal itself. Our guide Ricardo was a very skilled and knowledgeable birder/naturalist, and we had excellent local birders at each location. Our final tally was most impressive, with excellent sightings of many scarce and difficult species, expertly located by our guides.

This Brazil trip has the potential to be a once in a lifetime birding tour. Unfortunately, this particular TOUR WAS NOT. One participant demanded and took 70% of the guide's time both in the field and during meals. Many of us struggled to see birds when the guide and X would stand in the "window" reviewing a photograph to confirm the. identity., instead of waiting til evening to do the confirmation. X was the only person asked if they had gotten a photo. We were often ready to shoot as the van moved forward only to have the van keep going, since X had got their photo. It often felt as though there were first class and second class participants. My wife and I were at the rear of a group of nine most days despite efforts to rotate regularly. More attention to proper etiquette and not asking one person to do photography when several folk had good cameras and lenses would have made this a 5 star tour.

With a focus on natural history, birds, mammals & some shrubs & flowers were identified and added to our appreciation of this region. Ricardo kept us busy but we had time for a siesta midday to regain our energy. The heat can be exhausting!
