Apr 14 - 25, 2026 | On our Colorado Grouse tour, you will witness the mesmerizing mating dance of Greater and Gunnison Sage-Grouse, Lesser and Greater Prairie-Chickens and Sharp-tailed Grouse. April is the time of year when these birds are foot-stomping, cooing and cackling, as the males try to impress females and dominate rivals. In addition, enjoy unmatched birdwatching - target species include Mountain Plover, all three rosy-finches, Dusky Grouse, Pinyon Jay, Thick-billed Longspur, and a host of mammals: Bighorn Sheep, Pronghorn, Elk, Mule Deer, Coyote and Red Fox.

This tour was absolutely wonderful in every way, The guides were knowledgable and determined, and they were also good humored and entertaining to spend A LOT of time with. The early bedtimes and get up calls were not as onerous as expected because the birds were excellent and the guides and other birders were very congenial to be with. The scenery was beautiful, the birds were fascinating, and all in all, it was just great.

Thank you so much for such a lovely review. We’re thrilled to hear that the tour felt wonderful from start to finish, and that the guides brought not only their knowledge and determination, but also such good humour to the experience. Those early mornings can certainly be demanding, so it’s wonderful to know they felt worthwhile thanks to the birding, the scenery, and the company of the group. We’re so glad the trip came together in such a memorable way for you, and we truly appreciate you sharing your experience.

Talented and dedicated guides led a logistically challenging tour to see some of North America’s natural wonders — multiple grouse species on the lek — along with fantastic scenery and other sought after birds.

Trip met all my expectations for seeing the target grouse and prairie chickens. It also provided great opportunities to see other birds in the varied Colorado habitats. The guides were excellent at finding birds and getting participants on the birds.

Excellent Tour especially the prairie chickens on Days 3 and 4. I really liked the owner (Stacy Hueme) of the ranch in Kansas where we saw both prairie chickens.

Dave and I very much enjoyed this tour with Chris Burney who is an excellent guide. Chris knows the area and he tracked eBird to provide positive opportunities to see the targeted species. We were delighted to see migrating warblers just arriving on the last day of the tour, Chris worked for that for us! For us the landscapes and habitats for grouse and prairie chickens were very interesting. For picnic lunches, he provided excellent food choices considering we are vegan/vegetarian. All in all our tour was much appreciated. Considerations - extremely cold in those early morning hides! Lots of driving for Chris to take us to Kansas to see species no where else. Fine for us but a lot of work for the guide. Good to plan ahead to have restaurants with vegan/vegetarian options.
