It is not often that I would say that there was almost too much birding on a trip. This trip covered a lot of southern Mexico territory from coast to coast to coast (almost). To do this, the days in the field were very long, but the results were spectacular. One of the amazing things about this trip was that in this very bird rich region, we encountered no other bird watchers. I felt like I was birding off the radar. And then there was Mexico's almost unknown, great wetland area that our Mexican guide called Mexico's little Pantanal. Mexico does not have the nature lodges and birding infrastructure like many bird rich countries in Central and South America. We stayed in a variety of Mexican hotels. Not staying at lodges meant we did not rely on feeders and bird friendly lodge trails to see any of our birds. All of the 372 species seen by the group on this trip were seen in their natural environment. The extra effort required was definitely worth while. The other feature of this trip that I appreciated were the cultural opportunities. Travelling through the States of Oaxaca and Chiapas gave us the chance to experience many aspects of Mexico's rich indigenous culture---both present and past.

Hector and Steve were excellent guides. They were so gracious to all of us and really went out of their way to please everyone. I really appreciate the time and work that Steve put into sharing the list on EBird and the follow up photos.
