This is a difficult tour to evaluate, as Sandra and I were the only people on it, so it essentially became a private tour. I give high marks to the leader, Jason, and the driver, Bosko, as well as the local guides. The itinerary was a good one and covered as many areas as possible where the birds most important to us were found in the time allotted. Accommodations in several places were as good as possible in their locations. However, rooms in the hotel in Entebbe were cramped, dark, lacking in storage space, and airless. In Kisoro, the bathroom in our room flooded every time we took a shower, and the hotel was not accommodating about meal times. Trekker's Tavern was a horror story, with cold, dark rooms, no place to hang things, and plumbing that mostly didn't work. Problems pointed out to staff were ignored. Food was generally good and plentiful throughout. We had major problems with the policies on drinks and tipping. Every other birding tour company we have travelled with pays, at the very least, for bottled water at meals, and many cover soft drinks and even beer and wine. On this tour, while bottled water was available in the field, we had to pay for it with a meal. Also, tips for local guides are included in the price of tours with other companies. They were not on this tour, which was already expensive compared to Uganda tours run by other companies. Information about the drinks and tipping policies was not included in the tour information we received before the trip, so we were unprepared for the amount of money we would need, and by the end of the tour we were running short of cash. Another major problem was the species list which we received before the tour. It was not specific to the areas we visited, but included every species ever seen in Uganda and even some which have never been seen there, so it was difficult to narrow it down to the birds we needed to know.

It was an amazing tour with our young and able guide and charming driver. We saw the gorillas very well while distancing. The papyrus swamp dugout sail to see the Shoebill was enchanting.. I would return for the mango and avocado salad and the birds, of course.
