Martin OXK Concert Ukulele With Padded Gig Bag Reviews

Part of Martins X Series, this beautiful-sounding ukulele has top, back and sides made from durable high-pressure laminate (HPL). Martin hand-selected the finest Hawaiian koa to give this instrument the rich grain pattern of a much more expensive ukulele. But, because it is made from HPL, you can take this concert uke anywhere—the beach, the stage, a road trip— and your only worry will be what song to play next. It may be the lowest-priced Martin uke, but you’d never know it from the way it looks and sounds.

This is my second Martin OXK Concert. I was looking for a robust ukulele to keep in the car to provide additional ukulele therapy to my patients. A friend came to stay and she was bitten by the ukulele bug , so I gave her my OXK. As with so much in life, you don't know what you've got until it's gone! That was the case with the Martin. I replaced it in the car with one of my a solid wood tenors, but it got travel sick , especially in the recent heat . Changes in temperature and travel are not good for solid wood instruments. Anyway, I ordered a replacement from Eagle Music and the uke goes everywhere with me. Although the body is not wood, but HPL (high pressure laminate), the sound is not thin. The tone is rich, clear and complex. If I were to alter anything on the uke, it would be the tuners. I think it would benefit from GoTo planetary tuners. You have to keep the Grover 2 friction pegs screwed really tight to prevent them slipping out of tune, and they are harder to tuner than geared tuners. Barry/Baz from GotAUkulele recently reviewed the Martin OXK tenor. It too sounded good but to my mind didn't sound much different from the concert, i.e., the concert punches above its weight for its smaller size. I would love to compare it alongside the tenor one day. I also think Martin should have offered the tenors with the option of the koa print finish. To my mind, it's the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
