“These strings purchased for an ancient 5-string Cammeyer banjo which over the last several years has been on a journey from light gauge steel (worked well, easy on the fingers and sounded 'Pretty') to light gauge Aqulia nylgut (also worked well, even easier on the fingers, sound different, more expressive) and then to Aquila red strings (which add several good qualities to the sound and playability).
There's a 'Need to know' that isn't in the manufacturer's guidance. You'll need to tie a loop in the string ends - easy, but even if you've a background in ropework, avoid using a bowline for this as, for the higher pitch strings, the bowline will cut the material from which the reds are made. Instead, use a 'Perfection loop'.
This instrument is of an age to tolerate only light gauge strings, if yours is similar, consider buying both a set of reds and a set of light nylgut. This one's sweet spot with Aquila 'Reds' is as follows: 1 and 5, nylgut, 2, 3, 4 - use 1, 2 and 3 from the Aquila 'Reds' set and keep the 4th for other purposes. Just three reds lifted the quality of the sound and as a set, all five work well together.”
