The EGW Solution for 3" 1911 Reliability
The secret to a reliable compact 1911 is a well-designed recoil system. Here’s why our kit is the superior choice:
Full-Length Guide Rod: Our one-piece, full-length guide rod provides more consistent and smoother slide travel compared to standard, short guide rods. This reduces spring kinking and improves overall function.
ISMI Optimized Single Flat Wire Spring – Engineered from premium chrome silicon or stainless steel, this USA-made flat wire recoil spring offers improved durability, reduced felt recoil, consistent cycling, and a longer service life compared to standard round wire springs—ideal for simplified, drop-in installation in compatible pistols.
Complete Drop-In Kit: This is a complete solution containing the blued guide rod, guide rod cap, and both inner and outer recoil springs.
Proudly Made in the USA: Every component in this kit is precision-machined and sourced in our Pennsylvania facility and is backed by a lifetime of service.

3" 1911 Guide Rod FAQ
Why is a dual-spring system better for a 3" 1911?
The extremely short and violent slide cycle of a 3" 1911 requires a sophisticated spring system. A dual-spring setup allows for a more progressive spring rate, providing a smoother initial impulse and then ramping up to effectively cushion the slide and prevent frame damage, which is especially important with the .45 ACP cartridge.
Do I need to be a gunsmith to install this kit?
While this is a drop-in kit that does not require permanent modification, proper function is critical in a carry pistol. Due to slight variations between firearm models, minor fitting of the plug may be necessary in some cases (like the Springfield Ronin EMP 3"). For this reason, we always recommend installation be checked by a qualified gunsmith.

It's a quality part but unfortunately, it did not solve my problem of shell casings coming back very hard-and-fast into my face. Next is to more drastically reshape the ejector.

In the past all of my EgW rods have been flawless I believe one time I had a spring to heavy and the slide would not full return to battery. But generally these kits are great and really add strength to the gun!

Purchased to replace the stock Kimber system in my 3" Ultra Raptor in .45 since I carry +P loads & occasionally & wanted less wear & tear on the gun from the stock 18lb spring system. The 22lb spring that comes with the EGW system (only weight available) sounded a little high to me & sure enough, I had about a 20% failure rate of the slide to fully cycle & pick up the next round of the box of 20 of my Barnes 185 grn +P carry rounds. I'm trying to obtain 20 flatwire springs from ISMI. I also find the takedown hole in the recoil rod unnecessarily too far back in the rod which makes disassembly more difficult, as well as the takedown 'rod' included with the system being very thin & flimsy. It continued to try to roll out of position out of one side of the recoil rod while attempting to orient the tool correctly. I cut the short end on one of my extra allen keys, which is much more stout, to match the dimensions of the tool provided by EGW. I'll stick with using the system since the spring is a single one making it much easier to change out in the coming years than the stock Kimber system, but if I were EGW I'd lower the spring rate below 22lbs & drill the takedown tool hole in the rod farther towards the muzzle end to make disassembly easier & beef up the quality of the takedown tool/rod.

Used this on a 45 STI Escort. Long life spring and I like the recoil feel it provides. As always, excellent service from EGW
