My daughter did not like reading. She has a language delay and has a hard time pronouncing words. This program is helping her with that. Certain books she really enjoys and others she only does to get the bonus in the next box. I’m hoping by the next school year that her teachers will see a big difference.

Just received the first box and right away my 7yr old son who loves to read took the box opened it and picked yo yes read it to his 3 yr old sister who the box is for but loves when her brother reads to her then followed along on the app . With in minutes they are fighting over the next book to read safe to say all 5 books are officially read and they can’t wait for the next box.

My son is actually excited to read! As a former kindergarten and 1st grade teacher I highly recommend Ello! Getting your kids, excited about reading, can be hard, even for teachers! My son quickly caught on how to use the app, it’s super easy, and started reading right away!

It’s a really neat app. My daughter loves it. The only thing she doesn’t like is it doesn’t pick her up all the time when she is reading.

We have had Ello less than 24 hours and my severely dyslexic third grader is devouring his books because he loves reading to Ello! I think it’s less pressure for him and he doesn’t feel like he has to hurry through the story. It makes me want to cry happy tears to see a child who avoided reading at all costs ASKING “Mom! Can I go read to Ello?”

My son is 10 and going into 5th grade. He has always struggled with reading. We have done everything tutoring, kumon and more. He likes this because we can work on it together or he can do it himself. It’s easy to use and being able to earn a prize keeps him motivated.

My daughter did not seem to interested at the begging but once she read with little less help she got excited. The issue we had was ello would not recognize and take long to capture her reading. It frustrates her she keeps screaming what she reads overs and overs. Also another issue is sometimes it would over here what she was saying and go to the next page and she wasn’t done yet. It is a new tablet. We will try it one more month hopefully the app will work better and she can be able to read better.

Thank you for the review, Veronica! Speech recognition (as you might know from Alexa or Siri) isn't perfect. We walk a delicate balance between not wanting to be SO strict that a slight accent or difference in pronunciation results in Ello getting stuck or detecting an error, and also not wanting to be so lenient that it lets kids through with a ton of mistakes or doesn't correct a mistake. Kids are particularly sensitive to the first --no one likes to be told they are "wrong" when they aren't-- so we lean a bit more lenient. Ello is always there for kids (via the question mark) when they want help, and we never interrupt them during reading to correct an error. Teachers don't do this either. We wait until the end of the page and then have them go back if we think they missed a word. The bottom line is this: we think about the experience holistically. Ello is motivating support that will correct them on errors (although not all errors, by design), is always there to help if a child proactively asks for it, and motivates them to keep going! A few tips for speech recognition in case it helps: Ello can get stuck (though we don't get reports of it happening too often). Here are some things that might help or explain: any damage to the microphone internally, background noise, or clarity of the speaker (yelling actually makes it worse!). Here are some things you can do: 1). Skip the page if it is read (push the arrow forward) 2). Hit the question mark to see where Ello is stuck 3). Keep reading fluidly at least 5 or 6 words. Reading one word at a time can actually make it worse. When getting help on a single word (when Ello has the flashlight up), give a few seconds before repeating it again. Ello can sometimes take a second to process single words. Let me know if any of this helps!
