“One of the best educational apps to help my kids enjoy reading we’ve ever experienced. It’s been a long journey to get my son to actually want to read without getting severally discouraged as he was getting stuck on too many words. The book selections have kept him engaged, ello the character as been fun and motivating and the AI reading support has been second to none. Highly, highly recommend. Wish they would advance the app for kids 10-14 next! ❤️”

“My son has struggled with learning to read for a long time and now comes to me daily now asking to do his reading. We do two books a night and he’s read 30 books so far. I’m truly amazed with his progress and Ello has been a huge part of that. His speech therapy teacher is impressed with his improvement since starting as well. I’m recommending this to everyone I know, another friend plans to try it with their adult students with developmental disabilities. Great app and affordable price, also great customer service. Would give 5 stars but the apps “catch up” ability does give the ability to skip sentences if they read the last word aloud.”

“I love this app for my 2nd grader! We homeschool and reading has been a challenge because he wants to be independent but also needs help. This app allows him to take turns reading with the AI, and the AI even recognizes when he gets something wrong and will review it with him at the end of the page. I’ve noticed a big improvement in his reading already!! I love the progress reports that this app also generates and found it very insightful! The only thing I wish we could change would be make every book apart of the progress report, not just going through the quest because he is interested in some of the other books and even the create a story option but I keep him working on the quest (at least for now) so I can see his progress”

“My daughter has had difficulty learning to read and she just began Ello two weeks ago and has made tremendous progress in just two weeks! I am so amazed at how well her fluency is picking up in such a short amount of time. We are so grateful for Ello and can tell that a lot of thought and genuine interest was put into the creation of this app to help children who have difficulty with reading. I have never wanted to pay a monthly subscription for any app, until now! It is worth every penny! Thank you, Ello!”

“I love how Ella prompts phonics skills while working with the child to learn to read a word that's difficult. I also like that the stories are interesting and that there's lots of options. I'm a homeschool mom to four kids and I don't always have time to read side by side with my young readers as much as I'd like. This is a great option. But I was sad to see that the app is not just for reading and that it's very gamified. Instead of reading my kids are choosing to watch a lot of videos, they're creating books with Ello, which sounds nice but it's just a means for clicking around in the app rather than reading. Also the rewards for finishing books take up a lot their time. We're a low tech family and I'd rather my kids get bored doing a hard reading lesson with ello after ten or twenty minutes than spend ten minutes actually freaking and another forty "gaming" around on the app. I understand how this might insentivize the child to want to use the app but I actually think it's not helping them to read more it's a distraction from the reading and is simply building an appetite for more screen time, which lets face it the research is clear, screens are just not what are kids need more of/any of. So while I appreciate the concept at its core of ello I feel it went a little off course with some of the side features, and I'm not sure I'll keep using it, which is a bummer.”

We understand your concerns regarding the gamification aspects and how they may contribute to more screen time than you'd prefer. Balancing tech use with effective learning can be challenging, especially in a low-tech household. We designed these features to engage kids and motivate them to read, but we understand that sometimes they can lead to distractions from the core reading activities. Your insights are invaluable as we continue to enhance our app to balance learning with enjoyment. Please know that all of our "gamification" also has learning value as well - the videos at the end of the books are always connected to story and deepen text-to world learning; creating stories helps kids to understand story elements and story creation; and having stories read TO them is critical for developing fluency, modeling appropriate reading and prosity, and exposing kids to higher-level vocabulary beyond just reading. We strive to be thoughtful so the vast majority of the activities support reading beyond just straight decoding.
