“Our daughter (age 7) was very intimidated with reading but loved audiobooks. We attempted various reading programs but Ello was the one that “stuck” for her! She has read 70 books in two weeks of utilizing the app and a noticeable increase in her confidence towards read alouds have taken place. As a mom of multiple, I also greatly appreciate the AI assistance with her reading! Such a fantastic app and will continue to use for the reading to come! Thank you for making reading such a fun, positive, and exciting experience for kiddos like our daughter.”

“The idea is so amazing but truly the app is garbage. It would freeze constantly, not register books read, and not track progress. When I contacted cust service they said it was a known issue with no resolution in sight and offered me a refund. Avoid!”

Hi Chelsea, I am sorry the app did not meet your expectations. I looked back at your conversation with customer support and did not see that you reported any issues with the app freezing. It also looks like stars were assigned, and that progress within the app was registered. As noted in your conversation with our support team, you hoped that the parent progress report would update in real time (immediately) to calculate reading level and other metrics. As shared, the progress reports are updated within 24 hours of each reading session to ensure accuracy in reporting metrics. We are working on updating our system for immediate logging, but as of right now, there is a 24 hour lag period between when a child reads and when the parent report data is updated. This is to ensure the quality of the calculations and the accuracy of the report. We hope to shorten this time to less than one day.

“I love that this is something independent for my struggling reader to do to improve but I don’t have to hover, opening up time for me to do my tasks. However, I do feel that it’s not necessarily grading what he is reading. There’s times that he hasn’t finished the story and it’s done. There’s also times that he’s misread words and it didn’t address it. Also, would love for the program to self adjust instead of me having to figure out where he needs to go.”

Hi Cheri, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! We’re thrilled to hear that Ello is providing your struggling reader with some independence, but we understand your concerns about grading and the need for it to adjust automatically. We do move kids through a scope and sequence, and you should be able to access the parent portal to get a parent report regarding progress. Of course, kids can get distracted while reading, which may impact results, so parents can adjust the level manually as well. We also offer support to help with placement if you need it through our support team. One thing our reading specialists advised as we built Ello with them was not to correct every error. This may be a surprise for parents, but literacy specialists know that correcting every error will frustrate kids. While we will bring kids back to review words they miss at the end of the page, we won't do this for every error, but this is purposeful. “My child is loving Ello! She even chooses to do it without me suggesting it most days, which is one less thing for me to worry about then. Her favorite part is probably being able to create her own stories, while my favorite part is watching her confidence and reading fluency improve so quickly!”

“We were early Ello subscribers where we received books. Over time we found that our son started using the iPad only. Now that Ello has gone to app only and no books, it is so convenient. I can not speak highly enough about Ello and how it has helped our son's reading grow! The audible feedback is amazing!”

“Love this for my kids! Trying to get them a head start in learning and this helps! I’m a mom of 4, with the oldest almost 5, so this helps to channel some extra energy into a calm way and also excites them! They love completing quests and making their own stories! Sometimes I feel like hearing Ello correct a word versus me, they like the cartoon elephant better. This is building confidence in my 2 older kids (4) and (3) years old. We aim for at least one story each day, sometimes more if they’re really into it! We’ve had the app for about 2-3 weeks and we all love it!”

“Fantastic start to the Ello experience. The biggest struggle with my dyslexic child has been the lack of willingness to do the work to learn how to read. We've tried a number of different options but Ello is the first to hit the right combo of gamification and education focused on struggling readers. I'm hoping to see Ello add in more phonics-specific training that is customized to each student. Add in more phonics and dyslexia focused tools and Ello will start being used very widely throughout schools to atone for the years of skipping science of reading tactics in reading education.”

“I like the app to get my kiddo reading but i dislike how long it takes to get updated progress reports. I wish it was in real time. I got an email saying hes at 10 books but when i log in it still shows 3, which is frustrating. I tried reaching out via text like it says and still havent got a response.”

Hi Adrianna, We wish it updated faster too! We know how important it is for parents and kids to see progress in real time and to celebrate those reading wins as they happen. And I’m really glad to hear Ello is helping get your kiddo reading. That’s exactly what we’re here for. Our engineering team is actively working to speed up the processing time for progress reports. Right now, due to high demand, it can take up to a day for updates to reflect, and we know that’s frustrating. Your feedback helps us prioritize this even more. “Overall good. It accepts incorrect words quite a bit if the first consonant and vowel are correct (ie sat vs sad, mat vs mad etc). They need to work on that.”
