“My daughter has had difficulty learning to read and she just began Ello two weeks ago and has made tremendous progress in just two weeks! I am so amazed at how well her fluency is picking up in such a short amount of time. We are so grateful for Ello and can tell that a lot of thought and genuine interest was put into the creation of this app to help children who have difficulty with reading. I have never wanted to pay a monthly subscription for any app, until now! It is worth every penny! Thank you, Ello!”

“I love how Ella prompts phonics skills while working with the child to learn to read a word that's difficult. I also like that the stories are interesting and that there's lots of options. I'm a homeschool mom to four kids and I don't always have time to read side by side with my young readers as much as I'd like. This is a great option. But I was sad to see that the app is not just for reading and that it's very gamified. Instead of reading my kids are choosing to watch a lot of videos, they're creating books with Ello, which sounds nice but it's just a means for clicking around in the app rather than reading. Also the rewards for finishing books take up a lot their time. We're a low tech family and I'd rather my kids get bored doing a hard reading lesson with ello after ten or twenty minutes than spend ten minutes actually freaking and another forty "gaming" around on the app. I understand how this might insentivize the child to want to use the app but I actually think it's not helping them to read more it's a distraction from the reading and is simply building an appetite for more screen time, which lets face it the research is clear, screens are just not what are kids need more of/any of. So while I appreciate the concept at its core of ello I feel it went a little off course with some of the side features, and I'm not sure I'll keep using it, which is a bummer.”

We understand your concerns regarding the gamification aspects and how they may contribute to more screen time than you'd prefer. Balancing tech use with effective learning can be challenging, especially in a low-tech household. We designed these features to engage kids and motivate them to read, but we understand that sometimes they can lead to distractions from the core reading activities. Your insights are invaluable as we continue to enhance our app to balance learning with enjoyment. Please know that all of our "gamification" also has learning value as well - the videos at the end of the books are always connected to story and deepen text-to world learning; creating stories helps kids to understand story elements and story creation; and having stories read TO them is critical for developing fluency, modeling appropriate reading and prosity, and exposing kids to higher-level vocabulary beyond just reading. We strive to be thoughtful so the vast majority of the activities support reading beyond just straight decoding. “Our daughter (age 7) was very intimidated with reading but loved audiobooks. We attempted various reading programs but Ello was the one that “stuck” for her! She has read 70 books in two weeks of utilizing the app and a noticeable increase in her confidence towards read alouds have taken place. As a mom of multiple, I also greatly appreciate the AI assistance with her reading! Such a fantastic app and will continue to use for the reading to come! Thank you for making reading such a fun, positive, and exciting experience for kiddos like our daughter.”

“The idea is so amazing but truly the app is garbage. It would freeze constantly, not register books read, and not track progress. When I contacted cust service they said it was a known issue with no resolution in sight and offered me a refund. Avoid!”

Hi Chelsea, I am sorry the app did not meet your expectations. I looked back at your conversation with customer support and did not see that you reported any issues with the app freezing. It also looks like stars were assigned, and that progress within the app was registered. As noted in your conversation with our support team, you hoped that the parent progress report would update in real time (immediately) to calculate reading level and other metrics. As shared, the progress reports are updated within 24 hours of each reading session to ensure accuracy in reporting metrics. We are working on updating our system for immediate logging, but as of right now, there is a 24 hour lag period between when a child reads and when the parent report data is updated. This is to ensure the quality of the calculations and the accuracy of the report. We hope to shorten this time to less than one day.

“I love that this is something independent for my struggling reader to do to improve but I don’t have to hover, opening up time for me to do my tasks. However, I do feel that it’s not necessarily grading what he is reading. There’s times that he hasn’t finished the story and it’s done. There’s also times that he’s misread words and it didn’t address it. Also, would love for the program to self adjust instead of me having to figure out where he needs to go.”

Hi Cheri, Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! We’re thrilled to hear that Ello is providing your struggling reader with some independence, but we understand your concerns about grading and the need for it to adjust automatically. We do move kids through a scope and sequence, and you should be able to access the parent portal to get a parent report regarding progress. Of course, kids can get distracted while reading, which may impact results, so parents can adjust the level manually as well. We also offer support to help with placement if you need it through our support team. One thing our reading specialists advised as we built Ello with them was not to correct every error. This may be a surprise for parents, but literacy specialists know that correcting every error will frustrate kids. While we will bring kids back to review words they miss at the end of the page, we won't do this for every error, but this is purposeful.
