The saw is a good size for kids' hands, but it would have been better if it had come with a wood-cutting blade rather than the metal-cutting blade (hence 3 stars rather than 4). We found the wood-cutting blade at our local hardware store. With the proper blade, the saw is easy for kids to use and cuts well. Others have written saying the saw doesn't cut wood well, so we think that's because it came with a metal-cutting blade. The metal-cutting blade has smaller, finer teeth that cut very slowly through wood.

Post 25487670 with following response... Dear Mom of three, You are correct that the First Saw we sell comes with a "metal" cutting blade. Ideal for beginners, the blade is fine-toothed for smooth cutting and will not jam in the wood. This type of blade is recommended by teachers and our woodworking books because the tines of the saw are very small and close together. It is the perfect saw for mastering "how to saw" and it is ideal for "small wood" pieces like dowels or small branches. Once saw skills are mastered with this blade, the child can move on to a blade with bigger tines. We are glad that you were able to find another blade that fit your saw and we are pleased to say that we do now carry a Handy Saw Set (V560) which includes the current fine-toothed "metal" beginning saw blade (24 teeth/inch) and a coarse-toothed "wood" blade (10 teeth per/inch). Individual replacement blades are also available in both styles. Your satisfaction is always guaranteed. If you are ever unhappy with an item simply return it to us and we will be more than happy to offer you a refund, or an exchange for another item. Love the saw. It cuts very well. Perfect saw for my 7 yr old. We built a bird house over the holidays.

It saws fine on non wood products such as styrofoam. It is much harder to use on real wood, even on balsa. My grandson feels important just to saw anything so in that way it is rewarding for him. He feels like a big guy and says he is practicing so he can be a builder when he grows up.
